Grand Junction is one of four Western towns uniquely positioned to appeal to retirees. The easy access to the protected public lands of the Grand Valley area is one of the top considerations for retirees. Baby boomers and Seniors ranked clean air, clean water and access to outdoor recreation as being most important to them when choosing where to live. In the past retirees would say that healthcare and hospital access and the cost of living was most important to them. Perhaps this change in thought is due an active lifestyle that keeps retirees healthier and their “forever young” mindset. The economic benefit from relocating seniors is a boost to the economy. Seniors buy houses, furniture, country club memberships, clothing along with the necessary expense of utilities and staples. Between 2000 and 2010, some 500,000 seniors relocated to Western states, and 34,000 of them picked Colorado. The new residents created more than 19,000 new jobs. In 2012, Grand Junction made the top five on AARP’s Best Places to Retire list in 2012.
