Stand Up Paddleboard
Butterfly Pond and Las Colonias Ponds
You can bring your own watercraft or rent one from Grand Junction Stand Up Paddleboard, a locally owned business that is located between the Butterfly Pond and the boat ramp at the RiverFront's east end. There are three different ponds for people to enjoy at Las Colonias Park. The ponds have water features that you can enjoy by kayak or paddleboard. Swimming and tubes are not allowed in the ponds.
A Lazy, lengthy and accessible water channel
River Park
The River Park at Las Colonias includes a lazy, lengthy and accessible water channel, two standing wave water features, and beach and wading areas. These amenities are accessible to a wide range of ages, ability and experience levels. There is also boat ramp on the east side of Las Colonias Park for boats to enter and exit the Colorado River.
The Grand Junction Stand Up Paddleboard business by the boat ramp offers lessons on both the pond and the river, as well as shuttle services to Corn Lake and Blue Herron Lake for people who want to float the river. They also offer SUP yoga and moonlight paddle classes. They open Memorial Day and close around mid-September. The River Park remains open year-round from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
A peaceful, natural area to enjoy the outdoors
Where the Kids Play
The River Park has been popular with both locals and guests, but there is enough shoreline to spread out along this natural free-flowing river and pond, where there are beaches and wading areas along the channel.
Stand up paddle boarding involves using a paddle to move through the water while standing or kneeling on the board. Newbies to the water sport like to start off in the Butterfly Pond, before trying the river channel that creates a wave you can surf with your paddleboard or kayak. The channel is calmer than the main river, so after you acquire your skills and confidence on the Butterfly Lake you can move over to the channel.
Other Amenities
Adjacent to the River Park are two dogs parks so Fido gets some playtime too!
Las Colonias Amphitheater is steps away from the River Park featuring great outdoor concerts with top entertainment
There are multiple picnic shelters, outdoor grills, open space, playground, restrooms and a skatepark.
Bonsai Designs, a Grand Junction based aerial adventure company, plans to build a zipline across the river, connecting Las Colonias to Eagle Rim Park on Orchard Mesa. Zipliners will walk across the pedestrian bridge to the launch site at Eagle Rim Park and then zip back across the river to the starting point at Las Colonias.
Las Colonias and River Park are located at Riverside Parkway and 9th St. Grand Junction, CO 81501
